Financial Literacy Key to Success in Any Endeavor
The crisis in education runs beyond low achievement. An entire body of essential knowledge has been overlooked in most schools. That missing information is financial literacy.
Parents may have always said, "Children today don't know the value of a dollar." Now we have proof they were right. We must intervene. We must teach more than mathematics. We must teach investing, inflation, real estate, and compound interest.
Along with the value of a dollar earned, a dollar saved and a dollar spent, we must educate our youth about entering into contracts. At the most basic level, how does one go about reading a contract?
While some adults bemoan grade-school use of calculators ("Children can't add and subtract in their heads anymore–like I did when I was in school"), could it be children need better calculators and the training to use? Could it be children need to learn how to perform financial calculations, such as cumulative interest rate over time?
While we're preparing children to perform well physically, socially and intellectually, let's seize the opportunity to also prepare them financially to thrive in the world they're soon enough lead!
